Untitled: The Dark Shy Pupil
Site-specific installation for The Earth is a Secret Knot at the Pickle Company, in response to the poem "The Dark Shy Pupil" by Christine Marshall.
This piece was done for David Ruhlman and Rachel Marston's wedding party and art exhibition, in which visual artists were asked to respond to selected works by writers. I loved the poem selected for me and immediately felt akin to its imagery. This loose collaboration resulted in a suspended kinetic installation with dripping molasses, invoking a repetition of the image of a black dilating and contracting pupil.
The Dark Shy Pupil
"The dark shy pupil
of sky, lit
against the quaking
lengths of unleaved
trees. Tips tilt
toward tips,
listing
heads within
a klatch of blackened heads.
And the moon, an iris
dilating. Watching
for its mate, the one
still traveling
towards another
kindred light. Likeness
following
likeness. Iron
filings lining
fields."
